Discover Old Town Tavern & Beer Garden

Walking down Duval Street, it’s hard not to get swept up in the music, the laughter, and the smell of something good grilling nearby. Right in the middle of that energy sits Old Town Tavern & Beer Garden, a spot at 900 Duval St, Key West, FL 33040, United States that feels less like a stop on a tourist map and more like a local hangout you’re lucky to discover. I first wandered in after a long afternoon in the sun, expecting a quick drink, and ended up staying through dinner because the place has that easygoing pull that makes time slow down.

The open-air beer garden is the real hook. String lights overhead, picnic-style tables, and a breeze that somehow always finds its way through make it a comfortable escape from the Florida heat. From a hospitality standpoint, outdoor dining like this isn’t just a vibe; studies referenced by the National Restaurant Association have shown that open-air seating increases guest dwell time and satisfaction, especially in warm-weather destinations. You feel that here. Conversations stretch longer, another round feels natural, and nobody rushes you out.

The menu keeps things approachable but thoughtful. You’ll see classic tavern staples-burgers, wings, and sandwiches-yet each item feels dialed in. One of the bartenders once explained how they test new dishes during slower afternoons, tweaking seasoning and cook times based on staff feedback before adding anything permanent. That process shows in the food. The burgers come out juicy, wings are crisp without being greasy, and even the salads don’t feel like an afterthought. When friends asked me later if the food was just bar food, I told them it was surprisingly well-balanced comfort food, which pretty much sums it up.

Beer lovers have plenty to be excited about. The rotating taps lean heavily into craft brews, including Florida-based options alongside well-known national names. According to data from the Brewers Association, craft beer continues to grow in popularity across the U.S., and places like this help bridge the gap between curious newcomers and seasoned fans. Staff members actually know what they’re pouring, and they’re happy to explain flavor profiles without getting preachy. I’ve watched them guide someone from a light lager into a hoppy IPA simply by asking a few relaxed questions about taste.

Reviews from regulars often mention the service, and that lines up with my experience. On one busy weekend night, I saw a server calmly juggle multiple tables while still remembering who ordered what beer. That kind of consistency doesn’t happen by accident. Industry best practices promoted by groups like the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute emphasize staff training and retention, and it feels like those principles are quietly at work here.

The location also plays a role in its charm. Being right on Duval means you’re steps away from shops, music venues, and late-night spots, yet the beer garden feels tucked away enough to hold a conversation. There are limits, of course. During peak season, seating can be competitive, and the noise level rises with the crowd. Still, most guests seem to accept that as part of the Key West rhythm rather than a downside.

What sticks with me most is how genuine the place feels. Nothing is over-polished, nothing feels forced, and the overall experience lands somewhere between a neighborhood pub and a lively social hub. If you’re the kind of person who values good food, knowledgeable bartenders, and an atmosphere that invites you to stay awhile, this tavern earns its reputation naturally, one relaxed visit at a time.

  • We had an excellent visit to Old Town Tavern & Beer Garden on Duval Street. The Fish & Chips with Smithwick’s Ale-battered grouper were hands down the best I’ve ever had. The batter was perfectly crisp, the fish was fresh and flaky, and the fries were hearty and well seasoned. Absolutely worth ordering!!! We also tried the Grilled Greek Salad with romaine, feta, olives, cucumber, tomato, and citrus vinaigrette. Even though we didn’t really taste or see the “grilled” aspect, it was still a flavorful and refreshing salad that paired nicely with the heartier fish and chips. Another highlight was the Blue Chair Bay Key Lime Colada, served on the rocks. It was smooth, creamy, and delicious. Even though it tasted more like a traditional piña colada than something uniquely “key lime,” it was easily the best one I had during my time in Key West! Darker cherries were a nice touch. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, and it’s also dog friendly as you can see from one of my photos our pup appears in. They kindly brought water for him and made sure he was comfortable (dogs do have to stay leashed on the floor). All in all, Old Town Tavern delivered excellent food, great drinks, excellent service and a welcoming vibe. I would definitely come back and recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal in Key West.

  • We came in around 630pm and there was plenty of seating. We seated ourselves and it took about 10-15 minutes for our server take drink orders. A little slow but service was good in all . Food was amazing. We ordered burgers and fish sandwich one issue with a burger that caused it to come out super late and manager came over to apologize. They took that burger off our bill. Great atmosphere, great good great vibe.

  • Stopped in on a Monday around 6pm for Happy hour. The pork belly appetizer was great and the beer was cold and refreshing. Also excited they had many nonalcoholic options on the menu so I didnt have to ask a million questions. Wish I could stay up till 11pm to do late night Happy hour! Our waitress was nice and quick!

  • The servers were great. Took drink orders. Came back when we’d had a Chaco to look over the menu. My wife is a vegetarian and was very pleasantly surprised by the veg options available. I had a cheeseburger and fries. Both my wife and I were happy with the food. The server came back frequently to check on us. The place had character similar to an Irish pub. It was clean. We found prices very reasonable. The only thing was the music was too loud. My wife and I had to lean over and talk up to be heard. We noticed too late there was an adjoining room that might have been quieter. Highly recommend this place!

  • Great spot with outdoor seating. Good people watching. Our server was excellent. She reminded us that happy hour was ending in a few minutes when we arrived so we wouldn't miss out. Tuna poke bowl appetizer was a ten out of ten. The short rib was crispy and hot with good heat on the pepper sauce. The meat was a bit under seasoned for our taste. We shared the fish and chips which offered two large pieces with tons of steak style fries. It was served with a very nice remoulade. The dish was hot and fresh but a tad greasy, for our taste. The hefeweizen and hazy IPA were cold and delicious. The dishes around us looked abundant and well prepared. The service was fast and very pleasant. Everyone was having fun. Old Town Tavern is worth a visit for sure.

  • It was pretty good, but the tuna pork was a bit salty, and the Shepherds Pie had a slightly gamey taste.

  • Stopped in after walking all over Key West this afternoon. Our party of 5 walked right in and were greeted happily and a table was cleared right away. They immediately brought us all some cold water. We were informed that it was happy hour from 4-7 PM, so our drinks and food were all discounted. To top it off, the food was amazing and our service was impeccable. We would definitely return!!
